Mini Diaries-Capturing the Moments

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Have always loved these mini diaries from Marta Designs.
The simple concept of pausing for a moment and being thankful for the moments in life. So easy ( as I have for years! ) to get caught in the constant mode of doing, aquiring and moving without even realizing it.
Love the spirit of these diaries ( and everything Marta does…) Take a moment to pause, and reflect. Whether you jot it down or not, trust me, it is transformative.

P.S. these are a GREAT and simple gift and Marta’s blog and musings as a new mom are a wonderful regular read.

P.P.S Isn’t her handwriting to die for?

Tepee’s

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

There is something so simple and fabulous about a tepee. We have on in our store in Scottsdale, and it becomes the perfect spot to hide, play with a friend or grab a book and get a way from it all!
I love the idea of having a giant tepee in a back yard ( or a treehouse! ) so the kids have a place to play and hang out. There is something magical that happens when they have a special space of their own. I remember, when my brother and I were young, building a fort in the woods near our back yard. It became the spot of many a secret plan, a snack or just a moment to feel like we were “in charge” over the months, friends would join us there. Since we spent hours outside playing, this was the perfect home base to go back to.

Why not bring this idea inside as well, in a child’s room or playroom. What can happen is pretty magical.

Silhouttes Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Ok, I admit I am a bit obsessed with silhouettes. There is something so simple and elegant about this art form, and I think something fabulous about the idea of creating and giving these as a gift. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Karl Johnson who has been creating wonderful silhouettes for years. Initially at Opryland ( where he met his now wife ) and now, on the pages of Oprah magazine as one of her favorites and has been in InStyle Magazine, Martha Stewart Weddings and Parenting Magazine. Scott and I made him one of our Preganancy Magazine picks for Mother’s Day ( more on that to follow…)

Always on the look out for great and personal gifts for friends and family, I love the idea of giving these for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or truthfully any holiday. Check out his work and website here…So easy ( and inexpensive ! ) Seriously, he is so talented and incredibly nice.

We are hoping to do some in store events with him soon. Stay tuned!

Party Invites

Monday, April 27th, 2009

A few years ago, our friends Jo and Pip ( real name Patrick ) were planning a birthday party for their son.
When we got this invitation in the mail, I knew it was a keeper. Love the simplicity, and the beauty of the picture…Who wouldn’t want to say yes to this little guy!

A perfect do it yourself type of invite, all you need is stock paper and envelopes, photo corners and a printer.
As another perk, your guest get to keep a picture of the birthday boy!

Sixx Design

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

You may have already heard about them, or may have seen their work, but did you know that Sixx Design is now going to have a show on Bravo?
This fab husband and wife team started out doing some projects in New York and are known for their love of family, sense of style and down to earth approach to life. Many a practical and stylish idea from their website and published work.
I LOVE their home in Great Barrington…the photo of the bicycles is fantastic.

Love their work, and excited to see the other projects that they are soon to be working on. This Bravo show should be great.
Can’t wait to see what wonderful homes they buy, renovate and flip. I shall keep my notepad handy for ideas.

( P.S. They are expecting number seven! )

Change the world

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Love this book from Chronicle..and website. Simply put, how can you in a small way help make the world a better place. Sometimes, it is hard to just get through the day to day, but when you live in the world, in your community and with your friends and family in a meaningful way everyone benefits.
Fascinated by people and things big and small that we can all do to help make the world a better place, thought this book captured this hope simply and well.

The website is so easy to follow and participate in. Check it out.

Stay tuned for some really inspirational agents of change…

A different View

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

We are in countdown/waiting mode. A few weeks ago, after a really smooth pregnancy ( It was getting there that was the hard part ) we had a bit of a scare and ended up in the hospital. All was fine in the end, and after 4 days of monitoring, steroid shots, antibiotics and one shot to stop the contractions, I was back at home officially on bed rest. At first, a bit odd. Getting home, and seeing the world from the comfort of a couch bed in our family room, was hard. I did not know how to interact and participate with out “doing”. The kids went about their afternoon activities, and after visiting me at the hospital the day before, were relieved that I was home and surprised that the twins were still inside. My husband as always found away for all of us to connect with our thoughts and feelings, and to experience this new phase of our family together. The visit to the hospital allowed everyone to see that all was okay and to know what was really going on. Just experiencing the fear and mystery and allowing us all to talk and be together was a gift. For years as a child, there was much that was “kept” from us…

Over the next few hours and days, my mind kept going back to memories of my mother. During her years of illness, she was in and out of the hospital for months at a time. Each time, I now imagined, re entering the world she never wanted to leave in the first place. While I always knew how hard those years were for her, I could see them more from my own vantage point. As a daughter who at the age of 8 lost her mom to a world that she could not fully understand, and grew a fierce independent streak for fear of losing others. With so many of the adults in our life focusing so much on her illness and path to recovery, my world and sense of self was all developed ( strongly I might add ) outside of our home. Over the years, this became my way in the world.

And here we are now, Ironic that right before giving birth to our daughters a first hospital stay. An opportunity to connect with the past, and to see things so differently. Next up, a doctor’s order to stay at home on bedrest, forcing me to slow down and reprioritize and truly get ready for these girls to come. In every way possible opening up to a complete family process and all the love that is between us.
Talking with my Dad, Brother, Stepmother and Aunt almost every day and hearing my stepmother initiate conversations about the past, the only one knowing or corageous to know what might have been triggered in my mind.

Our family being together, talking together and truly loving together as each moment is a new step forward.

It goes with out saying I think, that I feel incredibly blessed. I think for so many obvious reasons, and perhaps many less so.

When I was first told I was on bedrest, an outpouring of ideas of how to spend my time, and how bored I might get..Somehow, even then I knew this would not be an concern. That in many ways, this was a test and an opportunity, to stop doing and start becoming.

For these last few weeks have actually been a gift. A forced time to stop, and connect with our life and with all of the amazing people in it. To understand the magnitude of becoming a parent and to continue to view the world through my own perspective and those of others. To really and truly know that the hardest, most meaningful, and most rewarding work I will ever do is within these four walls of our home: with our family.

We Shall Remain

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

There is a fantastic program on PBS that just came out last week. We Shall Remain documents how Native Americans resisted being moved from their land, and tried to keep their customs and heritage alive and true. The program is aired over five episodes, and helps to educate us all on our rich American History.

Scott and I talk often about how to best share with our kids, and children in general our collective history, the struggles and triumphs of people and our own families and the sense that people as individuals and as groups can speak and act from the heart with love, honor and courage. So many lessons to be learned.
Our kids who love learning and are fascinated by history, and the heroes among us are sure to love this program.

Memories of my father over the years come flooding back, as he clearly sought to do the same thing.
Sharing and showing me what it was to be kind, empathetic and to be involved in the world in a gracious way. I remember watching Roots over a series of weeks, volunteering at the hospital, participating every Labor Day in the Jerry Lewis Telethon ( after a month or so of earning the money to donate ) and how he made this all a part of our every day fabric.

As always, if we can instill in our children the belief that anything is possible, and give them the confidence, courage and interest to participate in making our communities and world the best that they can be, we have done well by them. As always, along the way, what they give those around them is that and so much more.

Getting ready to record Episode number 2, on Monday evening, April 20th. Look forward to hearing your thoughts about the program..

How to Photograph your Kids-A perfect Mothers Day Present

Friday, April 17th, 2009

As someone who loves photography, and having a house full of pictures of the kids and family. I am always attracted to simple, stylish photography books. This one is a treasure, as it is both fantastic to look at AND full of practical tips to make all of us better photographers.

Camera-Ready, How to Shoot Your Kids from Arthur Elgort ( a fabulous fashion photographer ) is a treasure for so many reasons.
Photos are fantastic and inspiring, the text is kept to a minimum and the tips are practical and easy to follow and the book is one of my all time favorite gifts to give…Perfect for a baby gift, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.
Sadly the book is no longer in print, but you can usually find copies on Amazon.

Live What You Love

So many reasons to love this ( and put it in a kids room…)
A fab artist from Etsy ( who truly is a dear ) the beauty of letter press, the fact that you can add an element of art and thought for $12.50 to your kids room and the message itself. I have bought and given these many times for gifts, and we have one for little miss. s and for the twins as well.

A favorite Etsy Seller, found here..
Her website which is also so beautifully done found here

One piece of advice, each edition she produces in in colors that are so covetable..don’t buy too many, so you can see what she does next!
